An osteopathic appointment takes around 45 minutes, but it may be longer if it is a first appointment or a follow-up.
The consultation goes through three steps:
- History: you will be asked about the pain you are suffering from and your medical history. After this interview, the osteopath will tell you if osteopathic treatment is appropriate in your case, or advise you to visit your doctor to undergo further examinations, such as an x-ray.
- Tests: the osteopath will then establish an osteopathic diagnosis, by identifying the anatomical structure involved in the patient’s experience of pain and the underlying causes of the pain. At this point, he will develop an individualized treatment plan.
- Treatment: the patient will then undergo a variety of manipulative techniques which may include muscle and connective tissue techniques, rhythmic joint movements or haight velocity thrust techniques and gentle releasing techniques.
It is recommended to bring any x-ray, scanner, MRI, blood test results to your first consultation.
You will be asked to keep your underclothes on during the tests and the treatment.
The osteopath may give you exercises to do in order to maintain the treatment’s action outside of the consultation rooms.
